Life support...vape

Why do…people walk around holding their vapes in their hands as though it is a piece of life support equipment? Like poorly people with COPD do when they carry an oxygen bottle in a rucksack or a bag attached to their walking frame or wheelchair. What would happen if you took it off them? Would they collapse to the floor gasping for a vape? Sometimes, I do wonder.
